A little over a month ago, 17-year-old Baltimore rapper Young Don was in the hospital recovering from five gunshot wounds. The day before he was discharged he went live on Instagram with Shy Glizzy, where he freestyled and earned a co-sign from the DC rapper. “When you get better, man, imma fly you out. Fuck with me,” he said.
Young Don is clearly doing something right, and the level of skill he possesses at his young age could be the reason why. He started rapping in elementary school and freestyles most of his music. In an interview with True Laurels from earlier this year, the young rapper cites the internet, word-of-mouth tactics, and his consistency for the growing familiarity of his music and name. After a short stint in jail at 14, Don was able to link with DMV heads who have helped spread his music in that area as well. He strives to be as consistent as he can, not letting any injuries or unforeseen circumstances set him back.
Aside from consistency, the 17-year-old also aims to be versatile with his artistry. “I feel like I’m versatile as it is, but I can get better at really playing with these beats. I’m only gonna get better,” he said in the aforementioned interview. In his new single and video, “Get Clipped,” he practices this sentiment, letting his heavy Baltimore accent shine as he raps over a drill beat.
Young Don is paving a way for himself, and it’s only a matter of time until he has his breakthrough moment. Peep “Get Clipped” by Young Don below.
