Alt-Hip-Pop artist TeawhYB (T-Y-B) represents a brand of authenticity and ultimate connectivity, providing heartfelt-melodic commentary over guitars, synths, and drum kits. The cancellation of shows, notably an Official Showcase at SXSW 2020, forced TeawhYB to continue on through an introspective lens, prompting the release of “Controller 2” the debut single of his upcoming EP, “What We Were”. “With what’s going on in the world, it’s like we’re all going through a bad relationship and Controller 2 is the context to that metaphor,” says TeawhYB. Exposing the ambiguity and challenges of continuing a relationship in modern dating culture, TeawhYB sorts through life as the second option, with one who seemingly only wants a “warm body”. The nostalgic pop-punk-rap vocals accompanied by moody guitars stir up emotions of the early 2000s while tying in themes of contemporary hip-hop. Shot and directed by Adobe Bryant (credits: Dej Loaf, Yo Gotti, Finish Line, Under Armour), the video illustrates the confusion and emotional turmoil that ensues when you realize you are being treated as a side piece, but keep coming back.
