New York breeds some of the most talented artists and creators within the music industry. One of those being Powers Pleasant, 24-year-old producer and DJ, who serves as one of the founding members to the Pro Era collective. He's well-known for being the beatmaker behind Joey Bada$$' RIAA-certified platinum single "DEVASTATED." However, there are so many incredible songs that Pleasant worked on and it's hard to name them all at once.
From catching the attention Pharrell to producing for countless artists like IDK, YBN Cordae, and Buddy to name a few; Powers is easily one of NY's most active producers. He's released his debut LP, Life Is Beautiful, last year captured the attention of many.
In our recent chat, we got a deeper look into the production behind Princess Nokia's "I Like Him" and Denzel Curry's "EVIL TWIN" amongst others. Check it out below and keep an eye on Powers Pleasant, he'll blow up very soon.
Joey Bada$$ - "DEVASTATED"
This was a very epic day. "Temptation" Came from the same session. I remember we were recording at The Cutting Room. This was during the AABA sessions., Adam had this loop I thought was fire, sauced it up, and put some drums on it then Kirk redid them. Joey went right to the booth and 1take freestyled pretty much the whole song. It just felt good. Then we moved on. Days after it started to get stuck everyone's head and we were like nah this a Banger. Then I remember when he premiered it at Coachella and the crowd went nuts before the song was even out. They knew the words by the second chorus. Joey's biggest song to date.
Princess Nokia - "I Like Him"
We were working out of Cutting Room studios in NY. This was probably the 3rd or 4th session we had working on her album. She wanted a banger. She was rocking with the beat from the first chords I played. Made it in about 5 mins. Next thing I know it went viral in TikTok! It was crazy to see millions of videos of people rocking to the song.
BTS & Juice WRLD - "All Night"
I was in Koreas doing a Show with Joey Bada$$ and BTS reached out to work with Joey and I. Turns out RM the leader of BTS was a giant Pro Era fan. Went to the studio and I played him some beats. At the time BTS hasn’t really crossed over to America yet they were just really big in Korea I wasn’t too familiar. A year later they became the #1 artist in the world. And Told me they were dropping the song with the Goat RIP Juice Wrld
Beast Coast - "Coast/Clear"
This was during the BeastCoast sessions, there were so many of us and so much friendly competition I know I had to come with that heat. I started the beat in my crib and finished it in the uber on the way to the studio. It was one of the first beats I played and as soon as kirk heard it he went straight to the booth.
Denzel Curry - "EVIL TWIN"
We were recording in my studio in NY and I had two of the most hardcore rappers so I know I had to make a hard ass beat. I played the guitar and made the drums in about 15 mins they both started to write and came up with the back and forth hook that shit was crazy. Recorded it myself too. I knew this was gonna go crazy right away
