Many rappers have risen from Brooklyn into the limelight throughout the decades. Biggie came from Clinton Hill, Mos Def followed years after rising from Bed-Stuy, and Bobby Schmurda shared the tales of growing up in Flatbush. Lately, a new wave of rappers such as Flip Dinero and Pop Smoke put Canarsie on the map. Most recently, a new name has been generating a lot of buzz in that hood, and he goes by the name of Dusty Locane.
Locane's rise to stardom occurred instantly after releasing the "Rollin n Controllin Freestyle'' in August 2020. Before that, Locane wasn't even pursuing a rap career. Growing up, Locane dreamt of being a basketball player. After school, he would hit the gym and practice, but eventually, the streets began to call his name. "To be real with you, I'm not even going to lie [if it wasn't for rap] I'd be either locked up or even worse six-feet, but that's life and it's a good thing that I'm doing what I'm doing now," said Locane.
Coming up in Canarsie, also known as The Floss, Locane had one of two choices just like every other kid in the area. These kids either grow up and become law-abiding citizens by going to school and picking up a career or be out on the streets gang banging and scamming. Since playing ball wasn't working out he began to take to the streets.
Locane recalls the fall afternoon that started it all vividly. His right-hand man YJ passed on a beat that was meant for himself. Locane had never written raps, let alone freestyled but still took on the challenge. "I heard the beat and was like hold on, run that shit back. Of course, I ain't think it was going to do what it did. That wasn't the plan but it's how it happened," said Locane.
The plan was never to be a rapper, Locane wanted to be a ball player, but he got caught up in the streets chasing paper, and accidentally found a gold mine through the rap game. Although a lot has changed for him and began to live lavishly, he says, "I still be in the hood you feel me. I got out that mindset to be honest, but I still feel the same. I still be wanting to go down the block to the corner store."
Locane's catalog is steadily growing and he hasn't missed yet. He is constantly dropping songs accompanied by visuals that are either doing millions of streams globally or amassing millions of views on YouTube. Despite Locane establishing his own lane when his freestyle dropped, the listeners were comparing his sound to that of the late Pop Smoke, which attracted plenty of attention towards his music. All this caught the attention of Empire, who became his distributor.
This summer Locane plans on taking over by building up his catalog and touring in order to continue making a name for himself. The process of creating new music looks like it's having the desired effects too, as he is working towards the release of his debut project in June, Life of a Five.
Locane is the latest sensation coming out of Canarsie, and even though he stumbled into the rap game accidentally, he's now in it to win it. "I'm taking over this summer. You feel me 95th worldwide double M's, we the fever,” Locane said.
