Dev Hynes, better known by his alias Blood Orange, recently released the visuals for his track “Charcoal Baby” off of his forthcoming album Negro Swan. He enlisted the help of director Crack Stevens to manifest his creative vision for the video, which portrays the British songwriter in a duality of scenarios that both find him performing the airy track at similar, yet contrasting family gatherings.
The work of art comes with a message too, as the following quote is spoken at the beginning of the video: “You ask me what family is, and I think of family as community. I think their the spaces where you don’t have to shrink yourself, where you don’t have to pretend or to perform, you can fully show up and be vulnerable and in silence, completely empty, and that’s completely enough…We get to make ourselves, and we get to make our families.”
