Bakar takes a distinctly somber position on his latest extended-play.

London artist Bakar exploded out of anonimity in 2018 with his Badkid album that he critiqued as being more of a “scrapbook” and assortment of songs rather than being a coherent body of work, but he seems to have put this behind him with his newest EP Will You Be My Yellow? that is magical and concisely well-put together from “Yllw” to “Cashmere Tears.” The obvious standout from the project was the whimsical and absurdly catchy “Hell n Back” which has been on repeat for me personally since its release, and I cannot forsee taking it off my playlist anytime soon. Bakar’s spoken word passage on “Yllw” is stripped back and emotionally vulnerable, calling out to his fleeting love. This switch up was something I did not know Bakar had so firmly in his bag of tricks and I hope that when he eventually rolls out his next project this will be an central aspect to the album’s makeup. He recruited Dominic Fike for the other most notable track on the project “Stop Selling Her Drugs,” which is an ode to a girl lost and caught up in the scene. The instrumental for this tune is laid-back and fits Bakar’s more whimsical vocals well, and Fike slides in without missing a beat and matches Bakar’s portion well. I am so, so excited to hear what Bakar has in store and would strongly recommend his music and this EP to anyone. There is something for every listener here.
