Last week, we received our first jam-packed New Music Friday of the new year. With fresh music coming from people like Boogie, Dreezy, Sada Baby, Summer Walker, Lucki — not to mention bands like Weezer and Vampire Weekend — it could’ve been easy to miss the best release of the whole weekend, which came from Yo Gotti and Lil Baby as the two teamed up for, “Put A Date On It”.
Taking a place in the middle of a deserted intersection with a full-on Thanksgiving feast in the middle of the road, “Put A Date On It” is almost the perfect visual for this record. With Gotti & Lil Baby trading clever bars like, “You just like yo father and he was a rat, that mean he raising them mice,” over the June James production, the video accompanies these one-liners with quick, clever shots like the one with mice on the dead man’s body, recently killed by the always fresh Blac Youngsta.
Though the visual is dope in itself, the song is definitely what carries the load and paves the way for the New Jack City inspired video. Lil’ Baby absolutely shines as he siphons through flow after flow like new shoes, only stopping to accentuate ridiculous lines like, “VVS diamonds drippin’ all on my t-shirt, reach for it, Imma put ya face on it”.
