Elevator spent Grammy weekend in LA, mobbing around the city (per-usual) and caught up with a handful of up and coming artists.

Meet one such artist, StarFoxLaFlare. Picture Gun Play from MMG, crossed With Bob Marley. With his tall lanky build, dreads down to his waist and tattoos scattered all over his body, you can’t say he doesn’t catch your eye. He was wearing a XL Marlboro Nascar T-Shirt and some kind of denim that I had never seen. To be honest, I still don’t know for sure if he was rockin that fit to be ironic and trendy, or if he was really gutter and that was just what he had on his back. Anyways, as we sparked up a cigarette out front of the iconic Freak City, StarFox sparked a blunt the size of a gorilla thumb, which he continued doing literally every 15 minutes. I’m talking back to back.

He poured out countless stories quicker than I could take in. Multiple felonies, the who, what, when, wheres, surrounding all those… it was a lot. He was very open, cool as hell and treated us like family right off the bat. I tried to not ask too many questions and just let him speak. Basically, and yes we checked up on it, Starfox has had many run-ins with the law. Multiple gun charges, drug dealing; has had his door kicked in several times… Finally he got out of his “ghetto as fuck” home town after “finessing out the jam” in Florida and relocated to Los Angeles, where the good people at Freak City signed him to their record label and literally took him in. The dude who runs the store and record label, pictured below in the gucci bucket hat and all white jump suit, put Starfox under his wing, keeping him out of trouble, off the streets, helping him put shows together and providing a place to record. Starfox sleeps in the back of the shop in a black and neon light flooded room, sleeping on a makeshift bed he constructed from the clever placement of two white couches. The blunt smoking has not stopped since all of this began to be explained to us.

As we continued to get more stoned than I normally feel comfortable with around strangers, he played through his sound cloud and I became more and more intrigued as the records blasted out of the speakers sounding fucking awesome. All of his beats were crazy. Rapping about some of the same stories he had told us earlier in a half asleep, I’m off pills/ laid back but wild vocal style.

“I got my rock hiddin in my chap stick”

A lot of time I questions peoples authenticity, but hearing some of his lyrics like “I got my rock hiddin in my chap stick” I had little doubt Starfox tale’s were legit. Listen to his song “Crack Cocaine” and you’ll understand he’s not your “I’m a stoner but rap like a thug rapper”, no way, not this guy. You can dead that if thats even crossing your mine. Starfox is totally original and authentic. Watch the video below for his track “Hot Boy” that we shot on the fly at Freak City and get a glimpse for yourself.
