Chicago yeehaw outfit Pesto Western are back with an emotionally raw new single, "Dragged Back Down." Over a set of midpaced percussion and some teardrop guitar work, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist b.lake documents his battle with depression amid the ongoing pandemic, likening his experiences to falling down a dark abyss that he cannot escape from.
Because of how hushed sounding the vocals and instrumentation are, "Dragged Back Down" is emotionally cutting in a way that can be easily overlooked; it's not always the loudest voice in the room that resonates the most.
b.lake's Pesto Western part in crime, ANDIE, shows up in the latter half of the track to provide some angelic background vocals, driving home the emotional potency of this track. With just three singles under their belt, Pesto Western is new to the scene. But with how effectively b.lake and ANDIE play off each other, Pesto Western is definitely a group worth paying attention to.
