In 2018, I came across a soulful new artist named Kyle Dion and his ridiculous new single, “Brown”. It only took me one listen to get hooked to this record — and the artist — due to his undeniable funk influences, incredible vocal range, and overall persona. This past weekend, the Connecticut native returned to the spotlight with his long-awaited album, Suga.
At first listen, Suga wasn’t what I expected a full length from Dion would sound like, given the vibe provided on, “Brown”. Despite this, the direction he went in was a lot more unique, creative and harder to digest, meaning it had substance. Touching on themes of insecurity, new fame and of course, love; Dion proves his pen is up to par with his vocals as well.
Throughout the album, Dion taps into many different sonic influences as he channels his talents to create indie rock, soul music, reggae and more at a high level. Though the sounds vary throughout the project, it never feels discombobulated as the cohesion of the record is a primary reason for its’ genius.
Some standouts include the aforementioned, “Brown”, “Not All The Way” & “Glass House”. Check out Suga below and get familiar with Kyle Dion.
